HARD SCATTERING IN A NUCLEAR ENVIRONMENT: FAREWELL TO LINEAR k⊥-FACTORIZATION ∗
We discuss a dramatic change brought into the pQCD description of hard processes in a nuclear environment by a large thickness of heavy nuclei. It breaks the familiar linear k⊥-factorization which must be replaced by a new concept of the nonlinear k⊥factorization introduced in [1].We demonstrate the salient features of nonlinear k⊥factorization on several examples from hard dijet production in ...
متن کاملUnitarity cutting rules for hard processes on nuclei
Heavy nuclei introduce a new scale into the pQCD description of hard processes on nuclei, the saturation scale, and the familiar linear k ⊥ –factorization breaks down. It is replaced by a new concept, the nonlinear k ⊥ –factorization. Here we give a brief overview how topological cross sections for hard processes on nuclei are obtained from nonlinear k ⊥ –factorization.
متن کاملPion helicity structure and its consequences for the hard scattering form factor.
In a study of the elastic pion form factor for large momentum transfers based on a modified perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach we have included helicity components that are customarily neglected. Along with the inclusion of transverse momentum, this gives a large suppression of the form factor from the prediction of the original hard scattering model based on PQCD in the Q 2 domain where experime...
متن کاملStructure Functions and Parton Distributions
Much of the predictive content of perturbative QCD (pQCD) treatment of the hadronic hard scattering is contained in factorization theorems [ 1]. Their purpose is to separate longfrom short-distance effects in scattering amplitudes. They supply perturbatively uncalculable long-distance effects with physics content in terms of well-defined matrix elements, which allows them to be measured experim...
متن کاملParton Propagation in a Gluon Field
The phenomenological success of PQCD is based on processes where the effects of the color field environment on parton propagation can be eliminated or is universal. In hard diffraction and quarkonium production the PQCD subprocess is the same as in fully inclusive scattering, but the sensitivity to reinteractions is different. I discuss how this may be exploited to give new information on the d...
